In celebration of the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year and the 51st year of Head Start, NHSA is encouraging programs to participate in Head Start's First Day!
The start of the year is a great opportunity to invite your Members of Congress to come visit your Head Start center. Even if not on the first day, NHSA encourages Head Start programs to invite their Members of Congress to come visit their local center to celebrate the beginning of the school year. In order to assist you, NHSA has created a First Day Toolkit with 6 Simple Steps for inviting your Members of Congress - you can find your Members of Congress here.
Whether you secure a visit by your member of Congress or not, we are encouraging parents, teachers, directors, and other community members to celebrate by posting photos of First Day activities at your local Head Start program. Whether it is your daughter entering a classroom for the first time, your students enjoying their first circle time, the teachers at your center prepping their classroom, or your son getting ready for the bus, we want to see it!
Post a photo on your favorite social media platform - Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram - and tag the post with your Member of Congress and #HSFirstDay. This is a great way to spread awareness of the impact Head Start has on your kids, family, and community.
For Programs: Post our sample social media posts and information about the social media accounts of your Members of Congress in a central location. Encourage parents to post photos online as they walk through the door! Arrange classroom photos to post from your center and tag your Members of Congress! Find sample social media posts.
For Parents: Take photos at any point during First Day activities! In the classroom, at the bus, with new classmates and then post the photos using the #HSFirstDay. Make sure you mention your location and tag your Member of Congress. Encourage other parents to do the same! Find sample social media posts.
For Alumni: Do you remember you or your child's first day of Head Start? Post a photo from any of your Head Start days. The photo could be you or your child getting ready for school, going off to the school bus, or any photo you have from that time. Post on social media using the hashtag #HSFirstDay. Be sure to mention your location, your Member of Congress, and tag us at facebook.com/OurHeadStart. Find sample social media posts.
NHSA looks forward to seeing your photos and celebrating the beginning of the school year with Head Start programs across the country!
